About this job

We are currently looking for an Engineer to join the team in Delft.

You will work on a team that specializes in the development of ultra-high-end, one-off optical components for the space, semiconductor and scientific instrumentation sectors — regularly operating at the limits of what current technology allows. Our work integrates optical design, ultra-precision machining and high-accuracy metrology in iterative, project-specific workflows.

As an Ultra-Precision Optical Component Manufacturing Engineer, you will work at the intersection of machining, measurement and engineering judgement. You will actively shape processes and collaborate closely with specialists across disciplines. The role requires independent thinking, a willingness to challenge assumptions and the ability to adapt solutions based on data and multidisciplinary input.

You will contribute to unique optical components for leading organizations in the space and high-tech industry, including major space agencies and global aerospace and astronomy programs. This is a rare opportunity to work at the frontier of ultra-precision manufacturing, where expertise develops through hands-on practice, experimentation and close collaboration in a technically demanding, high-autonomy environment.

Job details

Ultra-Precision Optical Component Manufacturing Engineer

Main responsibilities

  • Manufacture spherical, aspherical and freeform optical surfaces using Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT)
  • Program, set up and operate ultra-precision SPDT machines for prototype and one-off components
  • Assess manufacturability in early project stages, covering tolerances, deformation risks, fixturing concepts and process feasibility
  • Develop machining strategies and tooling concepts tailored to specific optical and metrological requirements
  • Perform in-process and post-process measurements using high-accuracy metrology tools, including profilometry, interferometry and CMM-based methods
  • Translate metrology results into corrective actions in machining and process planning
  • Contribute to the design of interfaces, fixtures and mirror blanks with explicit consideration of manufacturing constraints
  • Document process iterations, decisions and results to support knowledge retention and reproducibility
  • Collaborate closely with optical and mechanical engineers to resolve complex, non-standard technical challenges
  • Maintain machines and tooling, and perform root-cause analysis when performance deviates from specification

Requirements

  • Background in precision engineering, instrument manufacturing, fine-mechanical technology, applied physics or a related field (intermediate to bachelor's level, depending on experience)
  • Experience with ultra-precision machining or advanced CNC processes; SPDT experience is a strong asset
  • Strong ability to read, interpret and produce technical drawings
  • Experience with CAD software; CAM experience is a plus
  • Comfortable handling high-value, sensitive components and equipment
  • Analytical mindset with an understanding of material behaviour, surface generation and error sources
  • Methodical, quality-driven working style with awareness of the broader engineering context
  • Clear communicator within multidisciplinary teams, willing to question assumptions — including their own
  • Proficient in English; Dutch is a plus

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with advanced optical metrology techniques such as interferometry, profilometry or wavefront analysis
  • Experience with corrective finishing methods such as MRF (Magnetorheological Finishing)
  • Experience integrating measurement data directly into process or toolpath optimization
