At S[&]T, we actively contribute to creating Space for a Safer Life. A unique part of our mission involves embracing alternative commuting methods such as biking and public transportation to get to the office! Our recent survey reveals that nearly half of us (48%) pedal through the streets on our bikes to reach the office, while a third (32%) opt for public transportation. These choices aren't just about convenience - they're part of our commitment to improving air quality and reducing environmental impact. We are excited to partner with RefMap Project, who shares our mission to reduce carbon footprint. Together, let's continue creating Space for a Safer Life! 🌍🌱 #RefMap #Environment #Sustainability

🌹𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆🌹 As we work towards Space for a Safer Life, it is our responsibility to make sure we're spreading awareness. Despite progress, women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) face persistent challenges, from underrepresentation to unequal opportunities for advancement. It's time to address these disparities and create a more inclusive and equitable environment for all. 🤝 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: Creating a culture of support and mentorship is essential for fostering the success of women in STEM. By providing networking opportunities, mentorship programs, and inclusive environments, we can empower women to thrive and excel in their careers. 👥 𝗔𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀: One of the most impactful ways men can support women in STEM is by amplifying their voices and advocating for their recognition and contributions. Whether it's in meetings, conferences, or publications, let's ensure that women's perspectives are heard and valued. 📚 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗰𝘆: Men allies can raise awareness about gender inequality in STEM by educating themselves and others about the barriers women face. By advocating for policy changes, organizational initiatives, and cultural shifts, we can work towards creating more equitable in the High-Tech Industry environments for all. Women bring unique perspectives, experiences, and talents, enriching the diversity of thought and driving innovation and creativity. No matter the field of expertise, women should follow their dreams! #InternationalWomensDay #WomenInSTEM

Always nice to tick off a life goal, and that goal was officially achieved today with the publication of my first scientific paper! One of my projects at S[&]T for EUMETSAT and the Japan Meteorological Agency led to this research, investigating the application of pre-trained object detection models for the identification and classification of Tropical Storm systems in geostationary weather satellite images. This work demonstrated that the need for preprocessing of the images and the development of complex bespoke models, as was the case in all literature reviewed, is not necessary. The size of datasets used was 2x-10x smaller for comparable performance to these bespoke models. It also introduced a novel method of accounting for the fact that unlike in traditional classification tasks, where each class is distinct and discrete, the classes of Tropical Storms are closely related (storms in neighbouring classes are much more alike than those further away). The best model trained in this study also had more classes than the ones found in the literature, giving more information regarding the intensity of the detected storms and allowing for easier translation between different intensity scales used by different meteorological agencies. It has been published here: https://lnkd.in/e_thpAsm A massive thanks to my colleagues Frank Hogervorst, Erwin Platen and Arie Kuijt, and Viju John, Jaap Onderwaater and Roope Tervo from EUMETSAT and Arata OKUYAMA from the JMA for all their help in the work.

S[&]T was present at the BeNeLux #Space4Defence Industry Day to discuss Space and Defence collaborations and developments in the BeNeLux. Space technology is indispensable for Defence and we are happy to contribute to the discussion and continue to develop crucial elements for Defence capabilities. We focus on the following domains: 🌍 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Earth Observation satellites are essential for delivering intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, aiding in mission planning and enhancing situational awareness. We are specialised in Earth observation data processing and analytics. 🛰️ 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Satellites are the primary source of Positioning, Navigation and Timing information. The impact of disruption of satellite navigation is profound and far-reaching and with this reliance comes vulnerability. We offer flexible and modular software and hardware solutions for monitoring satellite navigation signals and for increasing the resilience of navigation systems. 🌌 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 Space Situational Awareness (SSA) involves monitoring and understanding space activities, including satellites, debris, and potential threats. We are developing ground-based passive RF technology to improve space domain awareness. Let’s keep the discussion going by exploring with us how space technology can support your operation. #Space #Defence #B2B
