Research Intern (Automatic Change Detection Algorithms for Asbestos Agricultural Roofs)
Delft
Full time (40 hours per week)
Internship

About this job
We are currently looking for a Research Intern to join the team in Delft to create Automatic Change Detection Algorithms for Asbestos Agricultural Roofs to start in September 2025.
We welcome interns at every stage of their academic journey! Whether you're a bachelor's student looking to gain hands-on experience, a master's student seeking an internship, or you're ready to dive into your master’s thesis — we’ve got opportunities for you. We are flexible with the duration of the internship as long as it is longer than 3 months. Please specify which is your case on your motivation letter.
Are you ready to make an impact within S[&]T? We’re thrilled to help talented students reach their maximum potential. If you’d like to contribute to a safer life on Earth through your internship, we’ll be happy to guide you along the way to develop automatic change detection algorithms for asbestos agricultural roofs, which will help to ensure public health.
Large agricultural roofs that have been built before 1992 in the Netherlands often contain asbestos, a carcinogenic material causing over 200 000 deaths per year globally. Licensed companies need to be hired to demolish or refurbish roofs over 35m2 and Dutch government agencies need to perform periodic inspection to ensure the work is being carried out in the correct manner.
These government agencies wish to support the monitoring of these processes with a more efficient and targeted approach utilising satellite data. Progress is being made using change detection algorithms using daily satellite images, however, improvements can be made for automatic roof segmentation, the change detection algorithm itself and the addition of other data sources to complement the change detection algorithm.
As a Research Intern, you will be provided with the necessary computational resources, a dataset that can be used for evaluation, and a base model that can be improved upon.
We’re open to discussing various topics of research, aimed to improve this process.
