We are currently looking for a Lab Researcher - Sustainable Processes to join the team in Rijswijk.
The energy and chemical sectors are undergoing a significant transformation, embracing renewable energy sources, improving process and energy efficiency, transitioning to circular systems, and implementing carbon capture and utilization technologies. The department focused on energy systems and sustainable processes is actively contributing to these transitions. Key technical domains include separation technologies, gas treatment and conversion, electrochemistry, and bio-based building block synthesis. Projects are conducted in collaboration with partners across the renewable energy and chemical industries, as well as international research networks.
Current initiatives include industry electrification, biomass valorisation for second-generation building blocks, and the Circular Plastics program. Within this framework, the team is expanding its capabilities in sustainable chemical process development and plastics recycling.
To support growing experimental work, there is an opening for a lab technician to carry out laboratory-scale organic chemistry research.

Lab Researcher

Main responsibilities
- Participate in the design, setup, and execution of experiments in both laboratory environments and at client locations.
- Contribute to project teams focused on developing and validating new chemical processes.
- Perform hands-on research, including laboratory- and bench-scale experiments using specialized equipment.
- Coordinate with safety personnel and lab coordinators to ensure all experiments are conducted according to safety protocols and procedures.
- Document and report experimental outcomes, discuss findings with lead scientists, and collaboratively determine the next steps in project development.
Requirements
Educational and Technical Background
- HBO degree in Organic Chemistry, with strong interest in chemical engineering or process technology.
- Proficiency in downstream processing (DSP) and purification methods.
- Preferably experienced in analytical techniques such as GC, LC, FTIR, and thermal analysis.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a process laboratory or equivalent setting, including the operation of bench-scale setups.
- Interest in working with process equipment, particularly pressurized flow systems.
Skills and Attributes
- Strong communication and documentation skills in English.
- Demonstrated ability to approach complex technical challenges with curiosity and practical problem-solving.
- Flexible mindset and willingness to occasionally work at the Bergen op Zoom location.
- High level of safety awareness in handling chemicals.
- Independent and proactive approach in laboratory work.
- Practical, hands-on mentality and strong affinity with plastics recycling and bio-based materials.
- Capable of independently setting up and
performing test series, analyzing outcomes, and reporting results based on
guidance from scientific staff.
