The role is based within the national geological data infrastructure domain, which plays a vital role in addressing challenges such as climate change, sustainable energy, and spatial development. Through public-facing portals, essential subsurface data is provided to municipalities, engineering firms, and environmental organizations, helping them make well-informed decisions. The GIS Specialist role focuses on building and maintaining reliable, user-friendly GIS systems, with a strong emphasis on ArcGIS Enterprise. A background in geology is not required - technical proficiency and a proactive mindset are key.

GIS Specialist

Main responsibilities 

The GIS Specialist will be part of the GIS team within the Geo-data and Information Management department. The primary focus will be on modernizing and professionalizing the GIS environment while automating workflows. Key responsibilities include:

  • Technical management of ArcGIS Enterprise (ArcGIS Server and Portal for ArcGIS)
  • Supporting the transition from ArcGIS Server to ArcGIS Enterprise
  • Automating publication and data management processes using ArcPy and/or the Python API
  • Developing and maintaining GIS products and services on ArcGIS Enterprise or GeoServer
  • Collaborating with internal teams to deliver scalable, stable, and innovative GIS solutions

These activities contribute to a future-proof, robust, and accessible GIS infrastructure for a wide range of users.

Requirements

The ideal candidate is technically skilled, proactive, and collaborative, with a drive to improve systems and automate processes. Strong communication and teamwork abilities are essential, along with an interest in emerging GIS technologies and agile methodologies.

Required qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Geo-ICT, Geomatics, or a related discipline
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience with ArcGIS Enterprise (ArcGIS Server and Portal for ArcGIS)
  • Experience with ArcPy and/or the ArcGIS Python API
  • Proficiency in managing and maintaining databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL + PostGIS, and Enterprise Geodatabases
  • Familiarity with GitHub for version control
  • Knowledge of GeoServer is considered an asset
  • Fluency in Dutch or English (spoken and written)
  • A practical mindset, sense of responsibility, and strong team orientation
